Tisser ensemble

Ixchel, en charge de l’association AFEDES, anime avec nous l’atelier. C’est la fille de Marineta, une des tisserandes avec qui nous avons eu la chance de faire le projet. L’objectif de cette semaine est de co-créer ensemble à partir d’une méthodologie horizontale, inclusive et participative. On se questionne le premier jour sur les symboles de la lutte, de la femme forte, du pouvoir, en relation avec leur culture Maya. On retrouve des symboles comme le feu, les mains, les plantes, l’épi de maïs et la milpa (champs de maïs), la terre mère, le métier à tisser et des couleurs. Par groupes, les femmes dessinent ces représentations et commencent à tisser leurs propres interprétations. C’est une opportunité de créer un nouveau dessin et de lier leur héritage culturel à leur époque. Pour elles, c’est la première fois qu’elles tissent autre choses que les motifs transmis par leurs grands-mères.

Weave together

Ixchel, in charge of the AFEDES association, runs the workshop with us. She is the daughter of Marineta, one of the weavers with whom we had the chance to do the project. The objective of this week is to co-create together using a horizontal, inclusive and participatory methodology. On the first day, we wonder about the symbols of struggle, of the strong woman, of power, in relation to their Mayan culture. We find symbols such as fire, hands, plants, the ear of corn and the milpa (corn fields), mother earth, the loom and colors. In groups, the women draw these representations and begin to weave their own interpretations. This is an opportunity to create a new design and to link their cultural heritage to their time. For them, it is the first time that they have weaved something other than the patterns passed down by their grandmothers.

Atelier de co-création

La semaine commence par ce rituel quotidien : l’invocation des ancêtres. En chœur, elles s’unissent autour du feu et adressent leurs remerciements. Au sol, la lueur de bougies qui symbolisent ces éléments à travers leurs couleurs, et les bouquets de fleurs disposés à chaque point cardinaux. Bienvenue dans la maison des femmes de l’association AFEDES (Association Femenina par el Desarrollo de Sacatepéquez), au cœur du mouvement national des tisserandes. Ensemble, nous voilà réunies cette semaine pour un atelier de co-création. L’objectif : réaliser une nouvelle charte graphique qui propose une identité propre à l’association AFEDES, pour réfléchir à des symboles qui représentent leur lutte et leur engagement, et les utiliser comme symboles identitaires lors de manifestations ou d’évènements. Ixchel, la divinité des tisseuses mayas, veillera sur chaque journée. La documentation du processus créatif de cette semaine est exposée à l’Alliance Française de Guatemala City à travers des photographies de Caroline Perdrix.L’association AFEDES est une organisation de femmes Mayas Kaqchikel, qui œuvre pour l’Utz ́k’aslemal (la vie en plénitude) en promouvant l’harmonie et l’équilibre de la vie. Ici, les tisserandes issues de plusieurs villages se retrouvent grâce à l’association qui offre un espace de rencontre, de réflexion et d’action pour récupérer leur identité et leur histoire en tant que femmes Mayas. Dans la vision Maya du monde, les femmes sont intimement liées à la vie, à la nature et au cosmos. Depuis toujours, et encore plus aujourd’hui, les femmes sont fortes ensembles et fières de leur identité et de leur héritage Maya. L’association agit pour les droits des femmes pour mettre fin à la violence commise contre elles et la création d’une « nouvelle économie » en s’adressant à la nature structurelle des inégalités liées au patriarcat, au capitalisme et au colonialisme.

Co-creation workshop

The workshop begins with this daily ritual: the invocation of the ancestors. In chorus, they unite around the fire and express their thanks. On the ground, the glow candles which symbolize these elements through their colors, and bouquets of flowers arranged at each cardinal point. Welcome to the women's house of the AFEDES association (Association Femenina par el Desarrollo de Sacatepéquez), at the heart of the national weavers' movement. Together, we are reunited this week for a co-creation workshop. The objective: to achieve a new graphic charter which proposes an identity specific to the AFEDES association, to reflect on symbols which represent their struggle and their commitment, and use them as identity symbols during demonstrations or events. Ixchel, the divinity of Mayan weavers, will watch over each day. The documentation of this week's creative process is exhibited at the Alliance Française of Guatemala City through photographs by Caroline Perdrix.The AFEDES association is an organization of Mayan Kaqchikel women, which works for Utz ́k’aslemal (life in fullness) by promoting harmony and balance of life. Here, weavers from several villages come together thanks to the association which offers a space for meeting, reflection and action to recover their identity and their history as Mayan women. In the Mayan worldview, women are intimately linked to life, nature and the cosmos. Historically, and even more so today, women have been strong together and proud of their identity and their Mayan heritage. The association works for women's rights to put an end to violence committed against them and the creation of a "new economy" by addressing the structural nature of inequalities linked to patriarchy, capitalism and colonialism.

TABLE is also a global project, which expresses a desire to have fun around a meal, it is a playground, which evolves through collaborations with designers and craftsmen, and performers.

L’exposition « Savoir-faire textiles en Méditerranée », conçue par le Mucem et Itinérance, met en évidence ce que le patrimoine, matériel comme immatériel, peut apporter à la création contemporaine. Pour ce projet, des jeunes créateurs de l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs se sont confrontés aux collections d’exvoto méditerranéens du Mucem afin de réaliser une collection textile dans le cadre de leur formation ; tandis que des élèves de l’école Casa Moda de Casablanca (Maroc) se sont inspirés d’objets et de rituels liés aux cérémonies de mariage traditionnelles. L’exposition poursuit son voyage en Méditerranée par la Tunisie et la Grèce, sur les traces des ethnologues ayant étudié ces savoir-faire textiles et à la rencontre des artisanes qui les pratiquent encore aujourd’hui, s’efforçant de les faire vivre et de les transmettre.

The exhibition «Savoir-faire textiles en Méditerranée», conceived by the Mucem and Itinérance, highlights what heritage, both tangible and intangible, can contribute to contemporary creation. For this project, young designers from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENASD) confronted the Mucem’s collections of Mediterranean ex-votos to create a textile collection as part of their training; while students from the Casa Moda school in Casablanca (Morocco) were inspired by objects and rituals related to traditional wedding ceremonies. The exhibition continues its journey through the Mediterranean via Tunisia and Greece, following in the footsteps of ethnologists who have studied these textile skills and meeting the craftswomen who still practice them today, striving to keep them alive and pass them on.

It is in the mountains of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas, where henna has crossed the ages, that a new stage of this Mediterranean itinerancy takes shape. Founders of the association Memori-Lab suggested we meet Jamal Amrray, interpreter and ambassador of the Amazigh culture. Création d'un workshop initié par l'association Itinerance avec l'Academy de Mode de Casa Blanca et le Mucem à Marseille. À partir des archives, le conservateur Raphaël Bories, a présenté aux étudiant.e.s toutes les parures de mariage du Maroc. Ils ont alors effectué leurs recherches pour découvrir les parures de leurs régions: les motifs traditionnels, points de broderie, symboles ou rituels propres à leurs cultures. Ils ont ainsi puisé leur inspiration dans leurs patrimoines intimes et l’on interprété avec une nouvelle histoire: que pourrait-être leur parure ? Celle qu’ils garderaient et auraient envie de porter. Il s’agissait pour tous et toutes de transposer cette parure sur un même vêtement neutre, parfois unisexe, la chemise. La broderie des chemises a été réalisée en collaboration avec l’association de brodeuses Itqane. Les pièces seront exposées au Mucem en 2022-2023, puis à l’Institut Français de Casablanca.

Creation of a workshop initiated by the association Itinerance with the Academy of Fashion of Casa Blanca and the Mucem in Marseille. From the archives, the curator Raphaël Bories, presented to the students all the wedding finery of Morocco. They then did their research to discover the finery of their regions: the traditional motifs, embroidery stitches, symbols or rituals specific to their cultures. They drew their inspiration from their intimate heritage and interpreted it with a new story: what could be their ornament? The one they would keep and would want to wear. The idea was for everyone to transpose this ornament on the same neutral garment, sometimes unisex, the shirt. The embroidery of the shirts was done in collaboration with the association of embroiderers Itqane. The pieces will be exhibited at the Mucem in 2022-2023, then at the French Institute in Casablanca.

Film and montage of the creative process of Atelier Bartavelle’s collaboration with the duo Al Fresco. Drawing and making of the shirts thought together. From the perspective of an exhausted earth, this collaboration offers visions of other worlds. We painted and carefully made eleven unisex shirts. Each garment is unique and depicts shapes and colors inspired by the planets of our solar system.
